About your host
Hi my name is Sylvia, I was born in Holland and I live in Montepulciano where I work in the tourism and wine industry.
I am a certified sommelier and agent for several wineries in Italy. I give presentations and wine tastings where I discuss the history and the story behind the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
Montepulciano is one of the most charming and romantic Tuscany hill towns. It is a jewel of Renaissance history in art and architecture with the most fabulous wines.
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a high quality award winning wine rated in America as one of the top 15 wines to drink.
Wine and Food experience
I invite you to taste and learn about our wines during your visit in Tuscany.
We will begin our tour at the Piazza Grande where I will tell you about the story of Montepulciano and its famous wine, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. In the 16th century Montepulciano formed an alliance with Florence and I will share with you some of the symbols of Florence’s authority through art and architecture.
After a tour of the town we will walk to one of the most important wineries of Montepulciano.
This beautiful wine cellar is found under a church which belonged to a 14th century monastery “Convento dei Padri Serviti”.
We will visit the underground caves where the wine ages in oak barrels. When walking through the wine caves we’ll discover a wonderful treasure of an ancient Etruscan Tomb.
The visit to the caves will be followed by a wine tasting and lunch – dinner at the restaurant.

Sylvia organized a wine tasting tour at the Gattavecchi winery in September. We started with a white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano on the terrace. Then walked to the wine cellar and had a nice tour through the authentic wine cellar including a visit of the Etruscan Tomb. Then moved on for a delicious meal with 2 different red wines and as dessert a vin santo and grappa.
Four boxes of wine returned with us to the Netherlands. No regrets, because we have already ordered new Vernaccia di San Gimignano at Sylvia. Everything was and will be arranged down to the last detail.
Thank you Sylvia!
Sylvia gave us a terrific time in Montepulciano from the time we met by the ancient town water well, talking through some local history and a short walk to one of the oldest vintners in Montepulciano.
We visited the underground cellars and below this an Etruscan tomb room. We met the very friendly owner of the winery and his family, had a delicious lunch accompanied by vin noble tastings.
We needed a siesta by the time we were finished! Sylvia is a super simpatico and positive person who is happy to discuss any topic – wine and food related or just if you are curious about something Tuscan or Italian. Strongly recommended!
(unrelated tip – the small international classical music school at Palazzo Ricci has great student concerts every couple of weeks- 8 euro- we lucked in and saw one after our tour with Sylvia)
