Bravio delle Botti
The Bravio delle Botti 2020 takes places from August 22 till August 30.
Every year on the third Sunday in August is the Bravio delle Botti in the old town of Montepulciano. It is a wine barrel race between the eight contrade that compete against each other for the painted “Bravium” (a colorful banner with the city’s patron).
The Bravio delle Botti used to be a horse race but since Montepulciano is famous for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wines in 1974 the idea was born to run with wine barrels instead.
The week prior the Bravio delle Botti is full of great experiences. Every evening is a trial of each contrada in the centre of Montepulciano.
The town is decorated with flags of the different quarters of the town. The flags display the various contrada colors. Even the locals wear the contrada flag -in silk form- around their necks to show everyone their favorite colors.
On Thursday evening is the Corteo dei Ceri. The Corteo dei Ceri is a costume parade. Participants from each contrada present medieval life from a long time ago.
The performance of the Corteo dei Ceri is amazing and it attracts always many visitors. The evening ends up with exciting fireworks. A real emotional and unforgettable moment.
The Run “Bravio delle Botti” itself is always on Sunday. It is the most important race during the event. The start is at the Colonna del Marzocco and the finish is at the Piazza Grande.
After the start signal the pushers roll the barrels uphill for about 1800 meters through the historical centre until they have reached the Piazza Grande. This moment is a real competition between the eight districts.
The Bravio delle Botti is a wonderful festival and definitely worth a visit when you’re in Tuscany. The event always ends in a wonderful atmosphere.
